Dépollution
of the Tuileries LAFARGE tile factory
at Marseilles
When the Tuileries LAFARGE factory
at Marseilles was being closed down, ORTEC Generale de Depollution carried out the initial
diagnostic, then the in-depth diagnostic
of the land. The results indicated the
considerable soil contamination near to
old fuel tanks.
Following this investigation program, ORTEC Generale de Depollution gave a commitment
concerning the extent of the hydrocarbon
contamination, and proposed an all-in
fee for the site depollution.
Since work had to be carried out at considerable
depth (5 metres) at the foot of a railway
embankment, a special soil excavation
and treatment method had to be designed
and implemented. Vibration tests, installation
of Berlin walls and earthworks in alternate
strips, checking of water supplies and
special backfills were required in order
to manage this site to cope with the
stability constraints and evacuate 2000
m3 of earth to biocentre.
The
operation also involved the degassing
and evacuation of three overhead tanks,
demolition of premises and evacuation
of site waste.
The geotechnical constraints and deadlines
were respected and the rehabilitation objectives
reached within the specified budget.
